Our theme this month is Awareness, specifically awareness of the relationship of the self to the world. At our kids’ “Club House Meeting” last Saturday, we looked into a topic we all know very well from experience: arguing! They loved playing argument games and role playing disagreements.
What they discovered, though, was that while they were very familiar with arguments, they didn’t have much knowledge about why and how they happen. To figure this out, we developed some tools of self-awareness by getting inside the perspective of each side of the arguments. We practiced different methods for avoiding, compromising, standing firm without engaging in battle, and diffusing tense interactions.
Now in class, we’re working on bringing awareness into our everyday life, and kids and adults are finding new ways to take their training with them, wherever they go. Self-awareness can help us in our relationships with teammates, classmates, family and friends. It can also help us preform our jobs better and reach our goals.
