We have an awesome week of training coming up! Our theme is Flexibility for Safety. Sure, this is about staying limber so we can protect our bodies as we move. But it’s also about flexibility of the mind. A supple mental attitude is essential for self protection. Ever heard of a stubborn Ninja? I haven’t. And likely that’s because they didn’t last long enough to become the stuff of legends.
This week, I challenge you to free your mind, both in training and in your life. As Soke says, “Don’t have a fixed idea in your head … Use everything you’ve learned until now.” He was speaking here about not being fixed on the specific techniques when it’s time to flow and protect yourself. But the same concept applies to life. We can learn certain ways to handle certain situations, but when the moment arises, it’s important to stay present and to be open to the right tool for the job, whatever that may be.
Don’t you love how the dojo is a microcosm of the world outside, and a chance for us to practice all of these principles to help better ourselves in real life?
We’ll be working this week on moving seamlessly from one kamae to the next, and also on side rolls and break falls, and staying safe with partners by opening our minds and paying attention to the needs of each moment.
Be sure you’ve marked your calendar for our Ninja Halloween Party AND Our 5th Birthday Party! The fun happens Saturday, October 28th from 1-4 pm at our studio at 640 Merrimon Ave, Suite 207 (same complex as the Hop Ice Cream)
Thanks for reading and I’ll see you in the dojo!
